Rep. Jacobsen’s first bill, to help college students, passes the House

The Washington State House of Representatives unanimously passed a bill today that would help lower the cost of some material expenses for college students in Washington. The legislation was Rep. Cyndy Jacobsen’s first bill to pass the House.

House Bill 1119 would encourage the use of open source course materials at four-year colleges, as well as inform students of the prices of textbooks before they register for courses.

“I’m very happy to see this bill get voted out of the House today, and I look forward to seeing it become law,” said Jacobsen, R-Puyallup, who is the assistant ranking member on the College and Workforce Development Committee.

“I spent ten years as a community college course instructor, and I’ve seen firsthand how valuable this was for community college students,” said Jacobsen. “Using open source materials can greatly reduce the cost of students’ expenses for course materials. I have no doubt it would help students at four-year colleges, as well.”

The legislation has received strong support from four-year colleges, as well as students, who have testified in favor of it.

The bill now heads to the Senate for further consideration.

The 2021 legislative session started on Jan. 11 and is scheduled to run for 105 days.
