Senate unanimously passes Rep. Jacobsen legislation to help college students

A bill sponsored by freshman legislator, Rep. Cyndy Jacobsen, is one step closer to becoming law after it unanimously passed out of the Senate Friday.

If the legislation is signed into law, House Bill 1119would help ease some expenses for college students in Washington state. The bill would encourage the use of open source course materials at four-year colleges, as well as inform students of the prices of textbooks before they register for courses.

“I’m excited this bill is still progressing and I look forward to it reaching the governor’s desk,” said Jacobsen, R-Puyallup, who is the assistant ranking member on the College and Workforce Development Committee.

“Having spent a decade as a community college course instructor, I know how much this change would mean to students who are living on a tight budget,” added Jacobsen. “This legislation has received strong support from four-year colleges, as well as students. It could make a big difference to anyone seeking higher education.”

Because the bill was amended in the Senate it now heads back to the House for approval, before heading to the governor’s desk.

The 2021 legislative session is scheduled to run for 105 days and end on April 25.
