Rep. Cyndy Jacobsen opposes a bill that would make participation in prison work programs voluntary
Rep. Cyndy Jacobsen, R-Puyallup, speaks on the Hose floor to oppose House Bill 1233, which would make participation in prison work programs voluntary, except where the court orders a defendant to perform community restitution. Jacobsen points out that work gives people a purpose and a connection with others and that by passing this bill, we would be sending the wrong message to people who are incarcerated. Additionally, this legislation would remove the Department of Corrections’ ability to incentivize work with early release and privileges. Jacobsen says this is the wrong direction to go and that we should allow incarcerated individuals the opportunity to have the dignity of work with a goal in mind. Click below to watch.
