Kalles Junior High School student gains firsthand experience in state House
Kalles Junior High School ninth grader Henry Swanson recently spent a week at the heart of state government, serving as a page in the Washington State House of Representatives.
“Henry did a great job,” said Rep. Cyndy Jacobsen, R-Puyallup, who sponsored Henry. “And because he was in Olympia near a key point in the legislative calendar, he witnessed the process of debating and voting on bills on the House floor.”
The page program helps students gain valuable insight into the legislative process while contributing to the Legislature’s operations.
“The page program benefits greatly from students who bring their talents and perspectives to this civic experience,” Jacobsen said.
During his week in Olympia, Henry performed essential legislative duties, including delivering time-sensitive documents to representatives, facilitating communication between offices, and assisting with the day-to-day functioning of the Legislature.
Henry also attended Page School, where students develop a comprehensive understanding of Washington’s legislative system.
In addition to politics, the Puyallup student is interested in engineering and computer science. Henry also practices judo.
“The House page program is a valuable educational opportunity,” said Jacobsen. “Students like Henry gain firsthand experience with our democratic process, and I hope it instills in them a lifelong interest in civics and public service.”
The legislative page program bridges Washington’s youth and their state government, fostering civic engagement and providing practical educational experiences.
