Rep. Jacobsen seeks budget funding for girls’ sports measure, raises wrestlers’ concerns

Rep. Cyndy Jacobsen, R-Puyallup, spoke on protecting equity in girls’ sports and providing funding to implement citizen-led initiative IL26-638, if voters pass it in 2026, during House floor debate on House Bill 5998, the supplemental operating budget.

Her remarks were on a proposed amendment to provide funding for the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction to implement the initiative, which would protect girls’ sports by prohibiting biological male students from competing with and against female students. The majority party did not adopt the amendment.

Jacobsen raised concerns by female high school wrestlers in her district regarding boys being present in their locker room. Additionally, an alleged sexual assault during a wrestling match is currently under investigation by the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department and the federal government.
