Rep. Cyndy Jacobsen on local taxes: People have had enough — let’s fund our priorities
Rep. Cyndy Jacobsen, R-Puyallup, spoke on the House floor against House Bill 2442, which expands local government taxing authority, including property taxes.
“The bill allows local governments the option to raise the sales tax for children and families,” said Jacobsen. “That sounds nice, but I just was getting a briefing about the amount of Medicaid cuts we’ve put in our budget this year. We’ve also cut school funding this year. Let’s not fail to fund our priorities.”
Jacobsen referenced Rep. Ed Orcutt, R-Kalama, who also spoke in opposition to the bill. Orcutt said higher property taxes would hit homeowners and small businesses especially hard and noted that if people cannot afford their property taxes, they could lose their homes.
