Rep. Jacobsen speaks in support of alternative learning experience funding fix, citing benefits for districts and families

Rep. Cyndy Jacobsen, R-Puyallup, spoke on the House floor in support of an amendment to Senate Bill 6260 that would allow all alternative learning experience (ALE) programs to count toward local effort assistance funding formulas. Currently, local effort assistance is reduced if a school district has more than 33% of eligible children enrolled in ALE courses.

“My kiddos in home school used these alternative learning experiences, and by doing that, we brought down federal money for the district that we enrolled in,” Jacobsen said. “We got better curriculum. It was advantageous to everyone concerned.”

“I think it is wonderful that some of these smaller districts have promoted the alternative learning experiences, the online learning, as a way to make their bottom line balance out a little bit and yet provide a service that people need.”
